Response to: Fox News: "Opinion: 'SNL' fat-shames Sarah Huckabee Sanders" by Todd Starnes

The article that ruined my Monday morning

by Hannah Belleville

As I read this appalling article I became filled with rage. Starnes criticizes Aidy Bryant’s parody of the deputy press secretary claiming that she fat shames Ms. Huckabee Sanders.  He quotes CNN’s Chris Cuomo, “You guys were mean about Huckabee Sanders. You were fat-shaming her. You were talking about how she looks and what she wears. I thought that was mean, not funny.”

This article filled me with anger because SNL has been making a parody of Sean Spicer: the way he looks, talks, eats (chewing gum), and it has not caused an uproar. Mr. Starnes seems to have forgotten all the shallow, degrading comments President Trump has poisoned the media with for years. From 1991 when he told Esquire Magazine about the media: “It doesn’t really matter what [they] write as long as you’ve got a young and beautiful piece of ass,” to 2006 when he commented on Rosie O’Donnell saying, “I’d look her right in that fat, ugly face of hers and say, ‘Rosie, you’re fired,’” to 2016 when he said Hillary Clinton was an “enabler of her husband’s affair,” and finally in the 2016 First TV Debate he questioned Clinton’s looks saying, “She doesn’t have the look. She doesn’t have the stamina.” SNL is a satirical set of sketches performed to criticize the government and other issues in the world. The skit of Huckabee Sanders was no different than Spicer skits and was a joke to shed light on the bigger problem: the firing of FBI director Comey during the federal investigation of the Trump campaign and the incompetence of the Trump administration (no one knew why Trump fired Comey and the story was changed multiple times before the White House picked a story line and stuck to it). Trumps shows a pattern of abusive language to women throughout the decades and Mr. Starnes has not written an opinion piece calling him a “pompous, low-rent, intergluteal cleft” like he did SNL after their latest performance. Frankly his comments about SNL just demonstrate Starnes feeding into the disrespectful atmosphere that Trump has created in this country.
